Ex-military ruler Pervez Musharraf released

ISLAMABAD: Adiala Jail authorities have formally released the country’s former military strongman General (retd) Pervez Musharraf from his sub-jail.

He was imprisoned in his Chak Shehzad farmhouse near Islamabad which was declared sub-jail.
Pervez Musharraf was released from the sub-jail after he submitted two surety bonds of Rs100,000, two days after being granted bail in the murder case of Lal Masjid cleric Abdul Rasheed Ghazi.
Ahmed Raza Kasuri, senior lawyer and counsel for the former military dictator, said that Musharraf’s release was not part of any deal and the ex-president would address a “historic press conference” after his release from the sub-jail.
He claimed that fake cases were fabricated against his client.
Earlier, Pervez Musharraf was granted bail in the murder cases of Akbar Bugti and Benazir Bhutto. The former president’s name still remains on the exit control list and he will require the government’s approval prior to leaving the country.

Toll in Lyari firing rises to three

KARACHI: The toll in Lyari firing incident rose to three when an injured man succumbed to his injuries at the hospital Thursday morning, Geo News reported.
According to police, at least two people were killed and another was injured in firing by unidentified armed men in Lyari late on Wednesday night.
Unknown gunmen opened fire on P-1 passenger bus in Agra Taj colony of Lyari near a bus stop. As a result, one person died instantly while two others got injured who were rushed to Civil Hospital for treatment.
One of the injured died there after some time while the third one also succumbed to his injuries today morning, raising the toll to three, police told.
A body bearing bullet wounds was also found from the same area early morning after which the total count of casualties in one day has risen to four.

George Strait rides away with top country music honor

WASHINGTON: George Strait might be reconsidering his retirement plans after he picked up country music's top honor Wednesday for the third time in his long career.
Strait, 61, who's midway through his Cowboy Rides Away farewell tour, won entertainer of the year at the 47th annual Country Music Association (CMA) awards in Nashville, Tennessee, a laurel he last won in 1989 and 1990.
"This blows me away. I cannot believe it," said the down-to-earth Texan singer-songwriter, sporting his trademark 10-gallon hat and putting his hand over his heart.
"I'm so thrilled just to be nominated again... This means the world to me."
An old-school traditionalist in a genre very much in flux, Strait stunned country music fans last year when he announced his final concert tour, although he intends to continue recording and to make occasional live appearances.
Last year's CMA entertainer of the year Blake Shelton went home with his fourth career CMA best male vocalist award, as well as the album of the year trophy for his latest studio effort, "Based on a True Story..."
His wife Miranda Lambert won best female vocalist, also her fourth at the CMAs.
"Well, hell, thank you," Lambert told the capacity crowd at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. "I really didn't think this one was going to happen this year."
Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley, better known as Florida Georgia Line, won single of the year for their smash crossover hit "Cruise" and collected best duo of the year to boot.
Fellow newcomer Kacey Musgraves, with six nominations, went home with best new artist, while Little Big Town won for best vocal group.
Winning song of the year, a prize for songwriters, was "I Drive Your Truck" by J essi Alexander, Connie Harrington and Jimmy Yeary. An ode to a US soldier killed in Afghanistan, it was recorded by Lee Brice.
Despite her shift towards mainstream pop, the CMA bestowed a special Pinnacle achievement award on Taylor Swift -- and surprised the 23-year-old chart-topper by assembling on stage all the country stars she once opened for, Strait among them.
"I didn't know there was going to be all this," she said. "You've made me feel so special right now."
Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley co-hosted the three-hour gala, telecast live on ABC, for the sixth year running, warming up the crowd with witty swipes at President Barack Obama's troubled health care reforms.
"I started signing up last Thursday and I'm almost done," said Underwood before joining Paisley in a retooling of Strait's "Amarillo by Morning" that included the lyrics: "Obamacare by morning, over six people served."

Bannu: One security man killed, 8 hurt in checkpost attack

BANNU: An explosion occurred near a security checkpost in Mirzail area, killing one security man and injuring eight more on Sunday morning, sources said.
According to the security sources, the bomb targeting the security squad killed one personnel and injured eight others.
The sources said that curfew has been imposed on Bannu-Miranshah Road for indefinite period.

Rangers round up 12 including foreigners in Karachi operation

KARACHI: Twelve persons including foreigners of banned outfit involved in crimes were taken into custody and over 30 different types of weapons and drugs were recovered from them during a targeted operation conducted by the Rangers in Orangi Town and Pathan Colony on Sunday morning here, Geo News reported.
Rangers’ sources said that on a tip-off regarding the presence of some criminals at Pathan Colony in Orangi Town a targeted operation was conducted by closing all the exit/entry roads and several persons of banned outfit including the foreigners involved in crimes were taken into custody during the house-to-house search.

Govt. mulls over giving key defence slot to Gen. Kayani

ISLAMABAD: The government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is seriously mulling over giving a key defence assignment to the Army Chief General Ashfaque Pervez Kayani due to retire next month, said a report published in a US newspaper Wall Street Journal.
For Mr. Sharif, it is the most delicate of decisions. His previous periods as prime minister were ended prematurely by army chiefs. In 1999, he was ousted in a coup and imprisoned by the army leader he had selected, Gen. Pervez Musharraf. The current army chief, Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, during his two terms as army chief, has overseen the first democratic transfer of power in Pakistan's history and cooperated with the U.S. military, despite hostile anti-American public opinion at home.
Gen. Kayani had pressed for a further one or two years on the job, according to serving and retired military officials. That would be difficult for the government to grant after Gen. Kayani has already served twice the normal three-year term for the position.
Officials said Gen. Kayani is prepared to accept a revamped Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee job, currently a largely ceremonial post that would be given more authority, or to become defense adviser to the government.
He could also be placated with the job of ambassador to the U.S., the officials said, a post that has been vacant since Mr. Sharif took office in June.
The spokesman for Pakistan's military, Maj. Gen. Asim Bajwa, didn't return calls seeking comment on Gen. Kayani's future role.
The leadership changes come, as the army appears likely to launch an offensive in the next few months in North Waziristan, in Pakistan's tribal areas, a stronghold for Pakistani Taliban, al Qaeda militants and Afghan insurgents. Recent overtures to peace talks with the Pakistani Taliban have been marred by deadly attacks by the domestic insurgency.
In recent weeks, there has also been renewed tension with archenemy India, with frequent exchanges of fire across their disputed border in the Kashmir region.
Gen. Kayani has already turned down the offer of taking the Joint Chiefs job as it currently stands, and wants authority over military appointments and troop movement added to the position, a military official said.
"Kayani is using his office to say that he's the guy who can control North Waziristan, he's the one who can handle what is happening with India," said a retired army officer who knows the army chief. "With all this going on, he's saying now is not the time for a change of leadership."
All three potential appointments are made by the government. Sartaj Aziz, adviser to the prime minister on national security and foreign affairs, said discussions about Gen. Kayani's future were speculation, and declined to comment further.
Prime Minister Sharif, asked in an interview with The Wall Street Journal published on Sept. 26 whether he would reappoint Gen. Kayani, said: "I'm not saying yes or no." Mr. Sharif also holds the defense minister's portfolio.
An announcement on Gen. Kayani's future looks imminent, with the current Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, Gen. Khalid Shameem Wynne, due to retire on Sunday.
If Gen. Kayani is given that job, it would overturn previous expectations that he would simply have to retire in November at the end of his second tenure.
It had been expected that Gen. Wynne would be succeeded by either the Navy chief, Admiral Asif Sandila, or by Gen. Haroon Aslam, the army general who's most senior after Gen. Kayani.
"Ashfaq Kayani has had more than his rightful tenure," said Shaukat Qadir, a retired brigadier general who once taught Gen. Kayani at military academy. "Perhaps he should call it a day. It is not a good thing for the institution that it gives the impression that it cannot do without one person."
Political aides to Mr. Sharif said Gen. Kayani has proved that he isn't a coup-maker, and resisted pressure for military intervention during the previous government—the first civilian government in Pakistan's history that completed its term and handed over power to another elected administration.
Some Pakistanis said the U.S. was instrumental in getting Gen. Kayani's tenure extended in 2010—a move that angered some senior generals who saw their career advancement blocked as a result.
The U.S. hasn't been involved in the current discussions about Gen. Kayani's future, a U.S. official said. "We've really stayed out of it this time," the official said.

Polling in Skardu, Ghanchay by-polls underway

SKARDU: Polling in the by-polls for two seats of Gilgit Baltistan Assembly GBLA-9 Skardu-3 and GBLA-23 Ghanchay-2 began Sunday morning here, Geo News reported.
Pakistan People’s party (PPP) member had vacated the Skardu seat, but there was no candidate of the ruling party now. Polling for both the seats of Gilgit Baltistan Legislative Assembly is underway.
The number voters in GBLA-9 Skardu-3 stands at 23,614. Eight polling stations out of 55 have been declared sensitive. This seat was vacated after the resignation of PPP’s minister Shakil Ahmad on becoming the Judge, however, there is no candidate of the ruling party now. Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N)’s Haji Fida Mohammad Nashad and independent candidate Syed Abbas Mosvi are contesting for this seat.
On the other hand, a hot contest is expected between PML-N’s Ali Sultan and independent candidate Mohammad Iqbal in GBLA-23 Ghanchay-2. This seat was vacated after the death of PML-N’s Mufti Abdullah.

KARACHI, September 02 – Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys’ Association’s (AMUOBA) delegation headed by Engr. Muhammad Adil Usman, Chancellor Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology (SSUET) accompanied by executive members of the Association and others met elected President of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Mamnoon Hussain at Karachi and discussed various issues. The delegation of AMUOBA also brought to the knowledge of the President-elect other problems and challenges being faced by the Association and academic sector.

Chancellor Muhammad Adil Usman, President AMUOBA, on behalf of the Association presented best compliments and wishes to Mr. Mamnoon Hussain  for his brilliant success and commendable achievement. He said that the country expects Mr. Mamnoon Hussain would act to address the genuine problems for the economic prosperity of Pakistan.

He informed that due to the high standard of education at SSUET, around 5000 students studying in the university and “we are introducing three more technologies at the campus from the new academic year which includes Architecture, Software Engineering and Bioinformatics.” He told the President-elect that new university campus is being developed at the 200 acres of land in education city and the grand project of Sir Syed Tower has to take a start soon.

"SSUET’s Rs897 million deficit budget passed"

KARACHI, June 22 _ A Rs 897.07 million budget for fiscal 2013-14 of Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology was passed today.

The University’s Board of Governors which met here under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr.  Jawaid H. Rizvi, gave approval to the budget which shows a deficit of Rs 35.56 million.

The budget shows an income of Rs 861.50 million while the expenditure has been set at Rs 897.07 million thus making the budget in deficit by Rs 35.56 million.

Of the total budgetary estimates Rs 13.2 million have been earmarked for research projects while Rs 40 million have been set aside for provision of scholarships, Rs 26.9 million for purchase of additional lab equipments, Rs 20.5 million for construction of new academic block, Rs 7.8 million for providing financial help out of profit of endowment fund to students and employees. The University’s Endowment Fund has been set at Rs 320 million.

The budgetary estimates shows Rs 5 million having been allocated for providing financial incentive for Faculty carrying out work on research projects , Rs 0.8 million for Ph.D graduate program, Rs 5 million for hiring foreign specialists faculty, Rs 8.5 million for development of new campus on 200 acres of land as well as IT Park.

During 2013-14, the University will spend Rs 3 million on purchase of new books, research journals and equipments for the library.

A provision of Rs 23.3 million has been made for development works out of profit from endowment fund. The budget shows an accumulated development fund of Rs 111.4 million.

Out of total income of Rs 861.50 million estimated for the fiscal 2013-14, the university will receive Rs 752.15 million from tuition and allied fees, Rs 77.35 million from other income, Rs 31 million as profit on endowment fund and Rs one million from donations.

On the expenditure side, the highest chunk of the budget of Rs 545.48 million will be consumed on establishment cost.

The budget estimates of Rs 897.07 million for 2013-14 are higher as compared to revised estimates of Rs 791.41 million of 2012-13.

Similarly expenditure is also estimated to go up to Rs 897.07 as compared to Rs 791.41 million during outgoing financial year.

Meanwhile the Board of Governors  paid homage to late Chancellor Engr. Z.A. Nizami who passed away on April 7 and unanimously passed a resolution recounting the services and achievements of Mr. Nizami and his dedication and commitment to the cause of education.

The Board also gave approval to the recommendation of the University’s Academic Council for introduction of new disciplines.

Among others, the meeting was attended by noted nuclear scientist, Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, Prof Dr M.D. Shami, Cmdr (R) Saleem Siddiqi, Engr. Yusuf Siddiqi, Justice Fazl-e-Ghani Khan besides Registrar Shah Mahmood H. Syed and Director Finance, who presented the budget.

Robert Downey Jr. signs on as Iron Man for next two 'Avengers'

LOS ANGELES: Actor Robert Downey Jr., who has gained huge box-office success with his portrayal of Iron Man, has signed on to star as the superhero in the next two installments of the "The Avengers," Marvel Studios said on Thursday.

Downey, 48, was one of the main stars of the 2012 all-star superhero film "The Avengers," which united Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America, Thor and the Black Widow.

"The Avengers," made by Walt Disney Co's Marvel Studios, became the third highest-grossing film of all time, with $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office.

Downey is expected to be joined by Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson in reprising their superhero roles for "The Avengers 2."

"The Avengers 2," set for release on May 1, 2015, will be directed by Joss Whedon. Marvel said the film would reunite the superheroes from the first film, as well as introducing Marvel characters never seen in film before.

The three "Iron Man" films starring Downey from 2008 to 2013, have grossed more than $2.4 billion at the worldwide box office.

"Iron Man 3" released last month has become the highest-grossing film of the year, with $1.2 billion in global ticket sales, and the fifth highest-grossing film of all time, Marvel said in a statement. REUTERS

Karachi: Man abducted, killed near Ghas Bandar 

 KARACHI: A man was killed in a gunfire attack on his car near the city area of Kemari in today’s wee hours, SAMAA reported Friday.

According to police sources, Muhammed Altaf was in his car, when some unidentified miscreants abducted him and steered him away. A little later, they pulled over his car near Ghas Bandar, Kemari Gate-15 and gunned him down.

The deceased received three gunshot injuries.

According to police sources, Altaf was a resident of Khajoor Bazaar; the incident is further being looked into.

Suicide bomber kills 7 after close of Iraq polls

BAGHDAD: A suicide bomber killed seven people at an Iraqi vote counting centre on Thursday evening, police said, hours after polls closed in two Sunni Muslim-dominated provinces.

Most Iraqis voted for provincial councils in April but the Shi'ite-led government postponed elections in Anbar and Nineveh, citing security concerns after months of protests by the country's Sunni minority.

The decision to delay voting in those governorates was criticised by the United States, which said it would compound a sense of Sunni marginalisation that has fuelled a wave of violent unrest.

More than 1,000 people were killed in militant attacks in Iraq in May, making it the deadliest month since the height of sectarian bloodletting in 2006-07.

The suicide bomber blew himself up at a vote-counting centre in the city of Ramadi in Anbar province, killing seven people, four of whom were members of Iraq's electoral commission.

Earlier on Thursday, a roadside bomb hit a bus carrying five electoral officials in the town of Baiji in Nineveh, killing one, police said. In the provincial capital Mosul, a mortar round was fired at a checkpoint near a voting centre, wounding two soldiers.

On Wednesday, a suicide bomber embraced and killed a Sunni political leader, also in Nineveh.

"The people of Anbar and Nineveh overcame threats to cast their vote today, and violence failed to disrupt the democratic process," United Nations envoy to Iraq Martin Kobler said in a statement.

The first ballot to be held since U.S. troops left the country will indicate the strength of Iraq's Sunni political groupings before a parliamentary election due in 2014.

"We voted for the sake of our children. We want to get rid of the corrupt people and look forward to the future of our children and city," said 40-year-old Um Mohammed after casting her vote in Mosul.

The three provinces that make up the autonomous Kurdistan region in the north of Iraq hold elections on their own timetable and are scheduled to go to the polls in September.

Separately, the bodies of three men kidnapped on Wednesday were found handcuffed with bullets to the head and chest in the town of Sharqat, 260 km (160 miles) northwest of Baghdad. Two of the men were farmers and the third a policeman.

Sectarian tensions are running high in Iraq. The government has blamed attacks against both Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims on the al Qaeda-affiliated Islamic State of Iraq, which has been reinvigorated by the civil war in neighbouring Syria.

GST suo motu notice: SC to announce verdict today

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The Supreme Court will announce it verdict on one percent raise in the General Sales Tax (GST) today.

A three-judge bench of Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, has reserved its judgment on Thursday a suo motu notice regarding imposition of additional one per cent General Sales Tax and increase in prices of petroleum products.

During the course of proceedings, Salman Akram Raja, the counsel for Oil and Gas Regularity Authority (Ogra), told the bench that under Article 63 (A) no treasury member could oppose the proposed recommendations of the Finance Bill 2013 due to which the proposed increase of the GST from 16 to 17 percent was passed on to petroleum product prices.

Giving his remarks, Chief Justice said that the court had nothing to do with the imposition of a tax but had concerns on the procedural mechanism employed to implement GST increase from 16 to 17 percent.

KARACHI, June 12- The Spring Semester examinations at Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology concluded on Monday.

The exams in six engineering disciplines of Computer, Electronics, Civil,
Bio-Medical and Telecommunication Engineering and Computer science had started on May 27.

The University new semester classes will now commence from July 29 after a 7-week semester break.

KARACHI, June 10 - The students at Aligarh Institute of Technology (AIT) an affiliate of Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology, were provided an in depth guidance about selection of their career after they pass out, at a seminar on "career guidance"  organized by AIT for graduating diploma holders.

The objective was to guide the graduating Diploma holders in various technical fields, to choose a career and explore job opportunities.

The Seminar was addressed by Heads of Departments of A.I.T. and H.R. representatives of various private companies and multinational NGO’s.

The Key note speaker for the session was Muhammad Yahya Waliullah currently Director, Information Technology and Statistical Bureau of Sir Syed University of Engineering and ex Secretary, Sindh Planning & Development Department.

In an hour long presentation he guided and advised students as how to choose a Career and go up on the ladder of professional life. He identified path to success and emphasized that students will have to work hard in their area of specialization, as professionals have high demand in the market.

"Professionalism comes from education, training and social network", he pointed out adding that mastery over the subject in which one has obtained diploma has to be supplemented with advance communication and presentation skills.

Mr. Waliullah dilated upon as how to search for a job and what are the sources and preparing an effective C.V. that may catch attention of H.R. representative or employer and should focus on practical work done by students during their education, project preparation and internship.

He emphasized that C.V. should be as short as possible without leaving any information that may help in getting employment or job. He said major companies identify prospective employees on the basis of written test to determine knowledge base that includes some questions on I.Q. level and behavior of potential employee.

Once this stage is successfully crossed, he stated, selected candidates have to face interviews by H.R. and Technical Department of the company. These interviews usually focus on subject knowledge and candidate knowledge about the company, his approach on how can potential employees enhances production level, profitability and elevating image of the company.

That requires knowledge about the company and its competitors in the market, which can be obtained either through websites or printed material of the company.
Continuing, he said, important thing now a days is social networking like Facebook, Youtube, LinkedIn, Twitter which are powerful social media instruments and helps a candidate in many ways.
The Seminars was attended by 150 students and professionals and was followed by a question and answer session that resulted in clarification of some points and further guidance given to students and professionals.

Mr. Muslim Abbasi, Vice Principal and Mr. Shahid Jameel Head of Computer Information
Technology arranged the seminar while Dr. Hilal Qureshi Principal of AIT in his
concluding remarks emphasized upon the students to work hard as world has opened up and
there is fair competition not among natives but across globe as well.

 He thanked Heads of Departments, Vice Principal for making arrangements and Mr. Waliullah
for giving a useful presentation and guiding students.
