Robert Downey Jr. signs on as Iron Man for next two 'Avengers'

LOS ANGELES: Actor Robert Downey Jr., who has gained huge box-office success with his portrayal of Iron Man, has signed on to star as the superhero in the next two installments of the "The Avengers," Marvel Studios said on Thursday.

Downey, 48, was one of the main stars of the 2012 all-star superhero film "The Avengers," which united Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America, Thor and the Black Widow.

"The Avengers," made by Walt Disney Co's Marvel Studios, became the third highest-grossing film of all time, with $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office.

Downey is expected to be joined by Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson in reprising their superhero roles for "The Avengers 2."

"The Avengers 2," set for release on May 1, 2015, will be directed by Joss Whedon. Marvel said the film would reunite the superheroes from the first film, as well as introducing Marvel characters never seen in film before.

The three "Iron Man" films starring Downey from 2008 to 2013, have grossed more than $2.4 billion at the worldwide box office.

"Iron Man 3" released last month has become the highest-grossing film of the year, with $1.2 billion in global ticket sales, and the fifth highest-grossing film of all time, Marvel said in a statement. REUTERS

Suicide bomber kills 7 after close of Iraq polls

BAGHDAD: A suicide bomber killed seven people at an Iraqi vote counting centre on Thursday evening, police said, hours after polls closed in two Sunni Muslim-dominated provinces.

Most Iraqis voted for provincial councils in April but the Shi'ite-led government postponed elections in Anbar and Nineveh, citing security concerns after months of protests by the country's Sunni minority.

The decision to delay voting in those governorates was criticised by the United States, which said it would compound a sense of Sunni marginalisation that has fuelled a wave of violent unrest.

More than 1,000 people were killed in militant attacks in Iraq in May, making it the deadliest month since the height of sectarian bloodletting in 2006-07.

The suicide bomber blew himself up at a vote-counting centre in the city of Ramadi in Anbar province, killing seven people, four of whom were members of Iraq's electoral commission.

Earlier on Thursday, a roadside bomb hit a bus carrying five electoral officials in the town of Baiji in Nineveh, killing one, police said. In the provincial capital Mosul, a mortar round was fired at a checkpoint near a voting centre, wounding two soldiers.

On Wednesday, a suicide bomber embraced and killed a Sunni political leader, also in Nineveh.

"The people of Anbar and Nineveh overcame threats to cast their vote today, and violence failed to disrupt the democratic process," United Nations envoy to Iraq Martin Kobler said in a statement.

The first ballot to be held since U.S. troops left the country will indicate the strength of Iraq's Sunni political groupings before a parliamentary election due in 2014.

"We voted for the sake of our children. We want to get rid of the corrupt people and look forward to the future of our children and city," said 40-year-old Um Mohammed after casting her vote in Mosul.

The three provinces that make up the autonomous Kurdistan region in the north of Iraq hold elections on their own timetable and are scheduled to go to the polls in September.

Separately, the bodies of three men kidnapped on Wednesday were found handcuffed with bullets to the head and chest in the town of Sharqat, 260 km (160 miles) northwest of Baghdad. Two of the men were farmers and the third a policeman.

Sectarian tensions are running high in Iraq. The government has blamed attacks against both Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims on the al Qaeda-affiliated Islamic State of Iraq, which has been reinvigorated by the civil war in neighbouring Syria.

"Changes depend on values and morals says Chancellor Adil Usman"

KARACHI, May 28 _ Chancellor of Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology, Engr. Muhammad Adil Usman, has said that the changes depend on values and morals, and character is the magic component that makes someone unique among the contemporaries. Each of us has the ability and potential to develop and strengthen our character that of course ensures the success in life.
Engr. Adil Usman was speaking at the ceremony held in the honour of senior Aligarian Brigadier (R) Iqbal Shafi at Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology.

Focusing on the importance of character building, he said that the character is an amalgam of many qualities like honesty, integrity, dependability, diligence, loyalty, compassion, sincerity, attentiveness, determination, confidence, etc. and good character is when your head, heart, soul and hands agree to do the right thing, in the right way, for the right reasons and the combined effort gets the right results in the midst of the most adverse of conditions.

Chancellor Adil Usman pointed out that education without character is like a flower without fragrance and education isn’t mere textbook knowledge. As a matter of fact education in the true sense has a great role to play in shaping ones personality and character. Let a student learn thoroughly whatever he may learn and let his conduct be worthy of his learning.

Mr. Adil Usman was of view that students should have their education at top priority that necessarily builds their character. Following the thought and vision of the great educationist Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, students of Sir Syed University are promoting Aligarh Spirit throughout the world.

Speaking on the occasion Chief Guest Brig. (R) Iqbal Shafi said that for true development of the country, nation needs character building which is totally ignored in our country. No one give importance to it. We have nearly 177 universities in Pakistan but none of the university has any inclusive and comprehensive plan for character building of their students. Our universities are producing employees, professionals but no leaders. We have failed to produce leadership so far in the country.

Pakistan lacks actual democracy. Charter of Medina or Meesaq-e-Medina was the 1st written agreement in the history of world. After emigration to Medina, Muhammad (SAWW) drafted the Charter of Medina, establishing a kind of alliance or federation among the eight Medinan tribes and Muslim emigrants from Mecca, which specified the rights and duties of all citizens and the relationship of the different communities in Medina including that of the Muslim community to other communities, specifically the Jews and other.

Charter of Medina reveals Muhammad’s great diplomatic skills, as it instituted a number of rights and responsibilities for the Muslim, Jewish, Christian and other communities of Medina bringing them within the fold of one community—the Ummah.

He has got the Charter for Sir Syed University in Islamabad and it has affiliation with Punjab University. Brig. Iqbal Shafi informed that they have got the Charter for establishing Sir Syed University in Islamabad which has affiliation with Punjab University. In addition of the degree course of BBA, they are planning to launch the classes of M.Ed and B.Ed in near future.

“If we produce teachers, they will motivate students focusing on character building wherever they will go and it will eventually turn into a movement of character building,” he added.

Senior Aligarian Brigadier (R) Iqbal Shafi has been bestowed with Sitara-e-Imtiaz (Military) for his commendable services in Army. He also received Tehreek-e-Pakistan Gold Medal for his valuable services during Pakistan Movement. He is qualified in Chinese language. He was posted as Head of Military Mission to China from 1974 till 1976. He has been Honorary President Pakistan China Friendship. He worked as Director Agha Khan Foundation for 12 years. He is the President of Sir Syed Society, Islamabad and also Chancellor-designate, Sir Syed University, Islamabad

In the end Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Syed Jawaid Hassan Rizvi presented Vote of Thanks.
