"Eight killed as violence continues unabated in Karachi"

 
KARACHI: Eight people have been killed in different incidents of violence on Sunday across the metropolis.
A father and son were gunned down by unknown men in Orangi Town.
Police said that the body of a person was found beneath the Banaras Bridge, who was shot dead. Ajmal Khan was gunned down in Metroville area. Another person’s body was found from Sarrafa Bazaar at Mithadar, he was also shot dead.

Earlier, in a firing incident at FC Area in Liaquatabad, one person was killed and five were injured including the murdered Intelligence Bureau Officer Qamar Raza’s son Asad Raza, who later succumbed to his injuries.
Speaking to Geo News, IG Sindh Fayyaz Legahri said the sectarian strife was being increased in the city ahead of Muharram. Commenting on the situation in Soharb Goth, Legahri said there was a clash between two groups there and a heavy contingent of Police and Rangers had been sent to the area.
On Saturday, firing and violence incidents in the city claimed twenty dead including one police officer and one regional office bearer of Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal-Jamaat.

"MQM postpones public referendum; new date to be announced later"

Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Rabita Committee has announced that the public referendum which was announced to be held throughout the country on November 14 has been postponed in deference to the month of Moharram.
The decision to put off the referendum has been taken in a joint meeting of the Rabita Committee in London and Pakistan, said a statement issued by the MQM here on Saturday.
MQM Chief Altaf Hussain has also endorsed the decision of the Rabita Committee, it added.
The MQM body noted MQM leaders, elected representatives and other office-bearers would be busy in meeting with religious scholars in order to ensure inter-faith harmony during the month of Moharram. Taking stock of all the aspects, the Rabita Committee unanimously decided to postpone the referendum.
The new date of the referendum will be announced at some later stage, the statement said.

"Government has failed to ensure peace in Karachi: Nawaz Sharif"

LAHORE: PML-N president Nawaz Sharif said Sunday that the government has failed to ensure peace in Karachi.
In a statement, Shairf said the entire country was saddened over the situation in Karachi. The PML-N president added that despite their presence in the federal and provincial governments, parties elected from Karachi had failed to maintain peace in the city.
Nawaz Sharif advocated that the government should crush those criminals behind the wave of violence in the metropolis.

"SSUET compiles directory exclusively of its girls alumni"

KARACHI, Nov 7 _ Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology will be the country’s first university to prepare a directory exclusively for its girls alumni. The directory has been prepared by the university’s Girls Affairs Committee which compiled the data of SSUET’s girls students since the girls first batch passed out in 1998 and the last batch passed out in 2008.

The Chancellor SSUET Engr. Z.A. Nizami was briefed about the progress of the preparation of the directory at a meeting held here Wednesday. The meeting was attended, among others, by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Jawaid H. Rizvi, Registrar Shah Mahmood H. Syed besides officials of examination and other departments.

The In charge Girls Affairs Committee, Mrs. Attiya Abid informed the meeting that some 1234 girls had passed out from SSUET during the period 1998-2008 and as of the current position some 682 girls as against 500 last  year  were studying in various engineering disciplines. These girls form a big chunk of 6194 students studying in seven various engineering disciplines at this university.

The Chancellor was informed that Girls Affairs Committee is responsible to look after the day-to-day problems of the female students including activities of their five common rooms. Chancellor Nizami directed that any problem, if pin pointed by girls, should be solved immediately on priority. He instructed that social activities by girls should be promoted and 3-month programs be chalked out for this purpose. He assured that the university will provide every assistance in providing due facilities to girls under-going education engineering studies.

The Chancellor was informed that a program is being prepared in relation to health of girls. Nizami directed the committee to chalk out an extensive program that may produce visible impact in relation to activities of girls at the campus and hectic activities be generated thereof. He directed that a report be submitted to him for up gradation and refurbishment of girls’ canteen and common rooms.
 
 

"US wants to grab region's resources: Fazl"

ISLAMABAD: Amir Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), Fazl-ur-Rehman Sunday alleged the US wanted to hold sway over this region's politics and it is present here to seize its resources.
Addressing a conference titled 'Aalmi Ittehad Ummat-e-Muslima', the JUI-F Chief termed the overall law and order situation as poor and that there existed no rule of law in Balochistan.
Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman stressed the need to provide protection to the seminaries (Madressahs).

"Behar CM Nitish Kumar visits Mohenjodaro"

LARKANA: Nitish Kumar, Chief Minister of Indian state of Bihar on Sunday visited historical site of Mohenjodaro and said it was not confined to the culture of Sindh instead the site was a part of a great civilization, Geo News reported.
The visiting dignitary, who was accompanied by a delegation, took keen interest in the 5,000-year old civilization. He said that Mohenjodaro civilization was stretched from Sindu Stream to Ganga Stream.
He was also briefed about the historical, cultural and civil significance of the site. “We have been hearing and reading about the 5000 year old Mohenjodaro civilization,” he said and added that kind of civilization also existed in Bihar province.
Moreover, Mr Nitish also visited the family graveyard of Bhuttos in Garhi Khuda Bux and laid floral wreath on the grave of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

"Police, Rangers responsible for providing security to people, not protocol: CM Sindh"

KARACHI: Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah said Sunday that the main responsibility of the Rangers and police was to provide security to the people.
Shah added that the responsibilities of the Rangers and police were not limited to just providing protocol.

According to the spokesperson for the CM House, the chief minister visited several police stations across Karachi and expressed anger over the lack of policemen at several important intersections of the city.
Shah said that action would be taken against police officials and personnel who were not performing their duties.
Meanwhile, SP Traffic District Central has been immediately suspended, while all DPOs and DSPs have been directed to ensure 24 hour patrolling.

"Kohat: ANP MNA, husbad survive life bid"

KOHAT: Awami National Party (ANP) leader and Member National Assembly, Khursheed Begum and her husband Sunday survived a life bid here in Kohat, Geo News reported.
Reports have it that unknown gunmen fired shots at her car on Peshawar Road.
Khurhseed Begum and her husband, Saeed Shah Bukhari Advocate, were on their way to Kohat from Peshawar when they came under attack.
They were ambushed when they reached the Swati Gate area, police said.
“Armed men were lying in wait and as soon as the target approached they opened fire at it”, said an eyewitness.
The vehicle they were traveling in was damaged in the attack.
Terror gripped the area after the incident.
Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, Speaker National Assembly Fehmida Mirza, ANP leader Asfand Yar Wali, and other leaders condemned the dastardly attack on a woman in their separate messages.

"JSQM observes strike against police in Kotri"

KOTRI: Two vehicles have been torched by unknown men as a strike is being observed in Kotri district of Sindh province and surrounding areas on a call made by Jiye Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM) to protest against the registration of different cases against their activists.
Unknown persons torched two vehicles on National Highway near Taluka Hospital while the traffic also remained thin on road.
JSQM’s District Vice President Dedar Sham said that their workers were protesting against increasing crimes in district when the police arrested and registered cases against them.
