"Mortars fired from Afghanistan kill four in Pakistan"

Mortar rounds fired from Afghanistan have killed four civilians in a border village in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal belt, Pakistan security officials said Monday.
The late Sunday incident comes as a delegation of Afghanistan’s High Peace Council prepare to travel to Islamabad to meet Pakistani political and military leaders for talks on peace in their war torn country.
“Four civilians were killed in Nez Naarai village, in Shawal area of South Waziristan, when Afghan forces fired mortar shells from across the border,” a security official based in Peshawar told AFP.
A second security official said the victims were collecting wood and were hit by the mortar shells as they loaded it into a vehicle.
Two children were among the four dead, the second official told AFP.
The Pakistan foreign ministry condemned the shelling as “unhelpful and unproductive” and urged Kabul to take steps to prevent any repeat.

"RIM to unveil new BlackBerry phones on January 30"

The launch for the new BlackBerry 10 platform will be held January 30, as smartphone maker Research in Motion tries to regain traction against surging rivals.
The Canadian firm said Monday the launch “will happen simultaneously in multiple countries around the world.”
The struggling tech firm will unveil two new smartphones as well as the BlackBerry 10 operating system, aimed at regaining momentum against smartphones from Apple and those using Google’s Android operating system.
“In building BlackBerry 10, we set out to create a truly unique mobile computing experience that constantly adapts to your needs,” RIM chief executive Thorsten Heins said.
“Our team has been working tirelessly to bring our customers innovative features combined with a best in class browser, a rich application ecosystem, and cutting-edge multimedia capabilities.
All of this will be integrated into a user experience, the BlackBerry Flow, that is unlike any smartphone on the market today.”
The launch comes with RIM, once the dominant smartphone maker, rapidly losing market share.
RIM’s stock price has fallen to its lowest level since 2003, and in June the company shed 5,000 staff or 30 percent of its workforce.
According to research firm IDC, BlackBerry’s market share continued to sink, falling to just over four percent of the worldwide market by the end of the third quarter, as Android garnered 75 per cent.
The BB10 itself was to have been launched in late 2010, but the company in June announced a delay, a move which means it will miss the critical holiday shopping period.
If it fails to impress, observers are predicting the end of RIM.
Heins, who was brought in at the start of the year to replace RIM founders Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis and turn around the company, announced last week that BB10 encryption has been certified as secure for use by government agencies and others dealing with sensitive information.
The announcement aimed at RIM’s traditional key business and governmental customers, came after the Pentagon ended its exclusive deal with RIM to supply its vast workforce with Blackberry smartphones.
Another government agency, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, also said it was dropping the Blackberry device altogether in favor of Apple’s iPhone.
The US military and intelligence agencies have long preferred the Blackberry due to security concerns and had worried that Apple, Android and other smart phones lacked sufficient safeguards.
But the technology has advanced and Pentagon officials said innovative applications available on other smartphones could be useful for different units or offices.
Recently, RIM showcased its success in emerging markets, but analysts noted that the company is initially losing money in this push for market share.
Unmoved by the BB10 launch announcement, they are keeping their valuations of RIM unchanged, for now.
“We believe BB10 may be able to generate traction, but only as a Tier-2 device or even a Tier-3 device, in line with the current BB products,” said Northern Securities analyst Sameet Kanade.
Jeffries Group noted that RIM will also see increased competition from Microsoft entering the fray with its Windows 8 operating system, “attempting to establish W8 as the third mobile ecosystem.”
The two new BB10 devices, one with a QWERTY keyboard and one with a touchscreen, according analysts, will offer a catalogue of new applications, including games, productivity, social, lifestyle and leisure, multimedia and published content, as well as apps designed for business and enterprise use.
Messages, notifications, feeds and calendar events will be organized in a “hub” that can be checked “with a simple gesture” while working on other applications.
Users will also be able to keep personal applications and information separate from work data. More than 50 carriers are currently testing the new device, and more are expected in the coming weeks.

"48 hours closure ordered for CNG stations within Sindh"

KARACHI: CNG stations within Sindh province would remain closed for the upcoming 48 hours, sources reported on Monday.
Reports received from Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGCL) indicate that CNG stations would remain shut for 48 hours starting from Tuesday 9 a.m. to Thursday 9 a.m.
The closure of the CNG stations has been tipped to be because of the deteriorating gas supply pressure received from various gas fields.
CNG stations have continued to remain shut more often after the recent order by the Supreme Court to reduce the prices citing it to be unlawful profit. The consistent closure of CNG stations has piled on the sufferings of local commuters who find it really difficult to travel within the city considering the fact that the substitute source of energy i.e. Petrol has remained at its peak price of more than a 100 rupees per liter.

"Rain ruins New Zealand victory hopes"

HAMBANTOTA: New Zealand's hopes of posting a consolation win against Sri Lanka were shattered by rain as the fifth and final one-day international was called off after 28.3 overs in Hambantota on Monday.
Sri Lanka won the five-match series 3-0, with the first and last one-dayers abandoned due to rain.
New Zealand were strongly placed to register their first win of the series as they reduced Sri Lanka to 123-8, with fast bowler Tim Southee taking three wickets to put the hosts under pressure.
Southee, who finished with 3-18 off 5.3 disciplined overs, was brilliantly supported by seamers Andrew Ellis (2-22), Trent Boult (1-23) and Adam Milne (1-17) to give his team a hope of victory.
Opener Upul Tharanga (60) top-scored for Sri Lanka, cracking eight fours before being caught by wicket-keeper Bradley-John Watling off Southee in the 29th over.
He added 47 for the fifth wicket with skipper Mahela Jayawardene (24), the highest stand of the innings, after four wickets had fallen for 44 runs.
Southee did the early damage when he bowled opener Dinesh Chandimal for no score and then had Lahiru Thirimanne caught behind to reduce Sri Lanka to 33-2.
Thirimanne, promoted in the batting order, contributed a 15-ball 17 with three boundaries.
Boult dismissed Angelo Mathews before Milne got his maiden one-day wicket when he had Kumar Sangakkara caught behind for five.
Sri Lanka made two changes from the side that played the last match, bringing in paceman Shaminda Eranga and debutant spinner Akila Dananjaya in place of Nuwan Kulasekara and Rangana Herath. New Zealand retained the same side.
Sri Lanka and New Zealand will now play a two-Test series starting in Galle on Saturday.

"Mushfiqur Rahim hopes Bangladesh up to Windies challenge"

DHAKA: Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim backed his team to come good against the West Indies on Tuesday, despite the fact they have not played a Test for 11 months.
The Tigers played their last series against Pakistan in December, losing 2-0, and a rained-off warm-up game ahead of the two-match series added to their woes.
Rahim admitted it would be tough to play after a long absence from the Test arena.
Besides the rustiness, Bangladesh are also facing criticism over their poor record in the longer form of the game, having won only three of their 73 matches since attaining Test status 12 years ago.
Their problems were further confounded when coach Richard Pybus quit last month citing interference from the administration, handing bowling coach Shane Jurgensen the reins for the time being.
The Tigers face a bouyant West Indian side who beat New Zealand 2-0 in their last Test series before clinching the World Twenty20 title in Sri Lanka last month amid jubilant scenes reminiscent of their cricketing heyday.
Rahim hoped his batting line-up lived up to the glimpses of talent it has shown.
Fiery opener Tamim Iqbal and all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan have six centuries between them, and are considered to be Bangladesh's two world-class players. Rahim himself weighs in with a relatively respectable average of 29.01.
Still, the captain did not allow himself to be drawn into making any predictions.
West Indian captain Darren Sammy meanwhile hinted uncapped left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul's inclusion as the Mirpur stadium pitch is likely to offer spin with bounce.
The second Test will be played in Khulna from November 21. The Tests will be followed by five ODIs and a Twenty20 international.
