Karachi: Blast near Imam Bargah kills 2, hurts 20
KARACHI: At least two people have been killed and over 20 others
injured when a powerful bomb exploded outside a Shia mosque in
Pakistan’s largest city, police and hospital sources said.
According to reports on Sunday evening, the bomb was planted at the security barrier in the Gulshan-e-Iqbal area of Karachi.“The bomb was planted on a motorbike near a Shiites’ imambargah in Abbas town area, which exploded with a big bang killing at least three people and wounding 14 others,” senior local police official, Shahid Hayat, told AFP.
Another police official, Aslam Khan, confirmed the incident: “We had information about possible attacks by terrorists and this was confirmed during interrogation of terrorists whom we had recently arrested.”
Khan said that a remote-controlled device had been used in the attack.
Iqbal Mahmood, Additional Inspector General of Police for the Sindh province, confirmed the deaths of two people.
Fatehyab Jaffri, who was injured in the explosion, said he was sitting with others when a van stopped.
On Friday Pakistan had temporarily shut down the city’s mobile phone networks — fearing mobile phones could be used to coordinate attacks and trigger remote-controlled bombs.
Nationwide sectarian violence between the two groups is estimated to have killed more than 4,000 people since the late 1990s.
On Tuesday, police in Karachi arrested four suspected militants believed to be planning a wave of sectarian violence in the city, where 40 people were killed during three days of attacks just over a week ago.

Balochistan: Absent doctors to get show-cause
The government has also decided to seal the private clinics run by the protesting doctors.
Despite Balochistan government’s 24-hour deadline to end the strike, the medics boycotted the OPDs on Sunday, and warned that emergency wards would also be closed on 9 and 10 Muharram if authorities failed to recover Dr Saeed Khan.
Dr Saeed was kidnapped on Oct 16 from his clinic at Saryab Road, Quetta following which protests were initiated the same day. According to Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Balochistan President Sultan Tareen, kidnappers are demanding a huge ransom to release Dr Saeed and the provincial government seems helpless in capturing the abductors.
All Out-Patient Departments (OPDs) in major hospitals in Quetta remained closed due to the absence of doctors. The situation has amalgamated the problems of patients who cannot afford to visit expensive private hospitals. However, doctors attended patients in emergency wards and private hospitals.
